Your collectible popcorn bucket is part snack container, part display piece. A little care after each use keeps the colors bright and stops butter and salt from building up. Here's how to clean plastic buckets, popcorn tins and movie cups the right way.
The golden rule: hand wash only
Most collectible buckets are made of sculpted plastic with painted or printed details. Dishwashers use high heat and strong detergent that can warp plastic, fade artwork and loosen glued parts. Unless the product page says otherwise, always hand wash. You'll find the care instructions for every item in the Specifications tab on our product pages.
How to clean a plastic popcorn bucket
- Empty it. Shake out leftover kernels and salt over the trash.
- Wipe out the oil. Use a dry paper towel to soak up butter before you add water. This stops greasy streaks.
- Wash gently. Use lukewarm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft sponge or cloth. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh cleaners.
- Clean the details. A soft toothbrush or cotton swab gets into small sculpted areas.
- Rinse and dry fully. Rinse with clean water and let it air-dry upside down before you store it.
How to clean a popcorn tin
Metal tins like the Forgotten Island Boom Box Tin or the Harry Potter Briefcase need extra care so they don't rust:
- Wipe the inside with a damp cloth and a little mild soap rather than soaking it.
- Never leave water standing in the tin.
- Dry it straight away with a towel, including the edges and hinges.
How to clean collectible cups and tumblers
- Take off the lid, straw and topper before washing.
- Use a straw brush for the straw.
- Light-up cups, like the He-Man Light Up Cup, should never be submerged. Keep the light-up part dry and wipe it clean.
- Stainless steel bottles, like the Buzz Lightyear Thermos, can be washed with warm soapy water. Check the product's care notes before using a dishwasher.
Mistakes to avoid
- Don't microwave a bucket or cup.
- Don't use bleach or solvent cleaners on painted areas.
- Don't store it in direct sunlight, which can fade colors over time.
- Don't stack heavy items inside sculpted buckets.
Displaying your collection
Keep buckets on a shelf away from windows and heat, and dust them with a soft dry cloth. A clean, dry bucket will look great for years.
